We confirm the pipe is lead, establish whether the supply is single or shared, locate the main and agree the route.
When the ground allows, we use trenchless moling, a pneumatic mole is driven underground from a small launch pit to the connection point.
A new 25mm MDPE pipe is laid at a minimum of 750mm, insulated where it enters the property and ducted through the wall.
The trench stays open for the United Utilities inspection, after which the new supply is connected and the old lead pipe disconnected.
Flags are relaid, drives made good and the site cleared.

Terraced property, short run: Generally the lower end of the range

Wirral is supplied by United Utilities, and they fund part of this work. In short: United Utilities pays for the new connection from your property boundary out to the water main, and you pay for the pipework inside your boundary. We are approved installers on their scheme and handle the application side with you.

In most cases, no. We use trenchless moling to drive the new pipe underground between two small pits, so the surface above stays where it is. Block paving is lifted by hand and relaid with the original blocks. Resin-bound and pattern-imprinted concrete drives are the exception, because any opening in them needs a specialist repair — we plan the route to avoid them wherever possible and tell you in advance if we cannot.

Most are completed in a single working day once United Utilities has approved the application and confirmed the connection point. Longer runs on larger plots occasionally need a second day. Allow around 10 working days for the application itself and up to six weeks for United Utilities to make the connection.
Usually yes, though it needs planning. Shared entries and joint driveways are common in Wirral’s interwar housing, and the route may cross land you do not solely own. We establish ownership and access at survey stage and, where a neighbour’s consent is needed, we will tell you before any work is booked. Trenchless moling is how we avoid taking up a driveway, lawn or patio to reach the water main.
A pneumatic mole is a self-propelled steel head that drives itself underground between two small pits. One near the property, one at the connection point. It compacts the soil outwards as it travels rather than removing it, and the new pipe is pulled through behind it. Everything above the line of the pipe stays exactly where it is.
In practice that means:
Moling is not always possible, and we would rather tell you that at survey than halfway through the job. A run may need open-cut excavation where services beneath the route are congested, where sandstone sits close to the surface (which happens across parts of the ridge running through Bidston, Oxton and Prenton) where the pipe route turns sharply, or where existing pipework has to be located precisely before we commit to a line.
Where a short open-cut section is unavoidable, we say so in the quote, we tell you exactly where it falls, and we price the reinstatement properly rather than leaving it as an afterthought. There is more on the method in our guide to the steps involved in replacing lead pipes.
Where the run is moled, you are left with two small pits, one typically inside the boundary near the stop tap and one near the connection point. Flags are lifted and relaid rather than broken. Block paving is taken up by hand, set aside and re-laid with the original blocks. Turf is cut, rolled back and replaced.
Resin-bound and pattern-imprinted concrete drives are the exception worth flagging. Both are effectively single-piece surfaces, so any opening in them needs a specialist repair to match, and a patch will rarely be invisible. If you have one of these, we will plan the route to avoid it wherever there is an alternative line, and we will tell you before you book if there is not. We clear the site, take away the spoil and leave the old lead pipe capped and disconnected.
